I don’t have good answers to that. I think he was a bit like a little boy who came to me once and said, ‘Well, what do you want me to do now,’ which was kind of funny because then you wouldn’t remember the past and the future and everything. But it was definitely nice. It was fun to be around the boy and talk to him, to spend time with him, to see how he was doing and how he was doing.

JONES What did you learn from your time with the boy

RICE Very happy. He went through an extensive amount of stress. His heart was breaking a bit, and he was a great athlete, but he knew that I was going to have to keep him up. He told me he could have done what I did and I was kind of like, ‘Well, what do you think about this’ and I just said, ‘I don’t know. Whatever your position is you got to make sure that I get my money’s back from the loan and if I don’t get my money’s back I get paid for what I’m doing.’ And he didn’t seem to change any of that. He didn’t really want to take the trouble. So I said, ‘Well, you know what if I do.’ He wouldn’t give any more trouble. He went back to school and got a job with Nike where he used to compete. A couple of years later I’m going on a full-time assignment as a trainer in New York. This is a small city and most people don’t know about it. And my job is to guide the kids over here.

JONES You did take in the NFL

RICE I do. So I guess the league’s not quite in my comfort zone. But in New York I don’t really know how much they knew about the team. So the league’s there because they think so. I know that there are plenty of players in New York who’ve been in the league and it’s only fair that I get to play. And then he gets the chance and they’re like, ‘I’ll be on the field.’ It’s just something I’m going to do my bit and I’m going to help the kids out.
