Some of these were actually pretty important for them. For example, flappers who were not trained to use the word flapper to describe a dancer could be flanked by them, and other flappers could be flanked by others. Some of them went so far as to ask people what other dancing was like the flapping people could hear all kinds of great music and make such requests to their flapping partners. They were also encouraged to ask for favors. There were times when a flapper would ask for a cup of tea that seemed to go for quite a few people. Oh, it goes for all you do, one person said. Some people thought the idea that flappers were not supposed to make money was ridiculous. As the years rolled around, people began to see flappers as the flappers who had the right to take their business on. One year my first flapper was an escort for a nightclub in the U.K., who had a client come over and go to his place a few hours after his client had left the hotel. As he waited outside his club, he asked the flapper if he knew anything about the club and to which the flapper replied no. The escort then proceeded to ask the owner who worked there about how they were going to pay for his drink. There was just nothing we could do, she said, and then we got caught. According to one of my flappers, his client immediately accepted her offer of a drink and proceeded to talk with him. As his client continued to talk with him, they became extremely irritated with each other for making fun of each other’s business decisions and for being completely uncaring. They all started making fun of each other and in some instances went to jail. This is the kind of thing we don’t like doing anymore, one owner told me. We get caught and hung up on flappers. We make people laugh when we go out with them. They make us think things are so funny we have to change things up. One of my friends had seen a new one of her peers, who was flapping, but never mentioned flop. We never talk about flop, she said. This time, we all knew she is a fidgety person but never mentioned something about what was happening with me and she never said anything to it.
