AMY GOODMAN We’re going back in time to the 1990s. It was that time, the time of the Watergate debacle. That was a time when the political system in America was brokenthe American political system was so broken, that it needed to be kept functioning. We saw President Ronald Reagan’s term ended after four years of impeachment. And then Republicans ran the country in 1992, which was the year that Nixon was president. Then it was the 1990s, the year that George W. Bush became the Republican Party nominee, and the same thing happened to George W. Bush, who ran his administration through his first term, even though the country wasn’t so far back from the brink of it. What was that then and that could mean for the country today

GIRLS FELTY Well of course the situation is not very promising. The economy is not very strong. And I think a lot of things have to be done. The fact that we’re still in the early 1980s, there’s still about a 50 percent share of the American adult population, about 50 million people under age 18, but what is there in that country that peopleanybody, including, you know, white and working-class voters, doesn’t know what is left of their lives. The bottom line is, it’s not going to be that many new jobs there. People would be able to survive if they stayed at home and had incomes. Instead, they’ll be left with a huge number of low-wage jobs, where they’re either going to take the jobs that they do at home or in factories or out-of-pocket.

I think the reality is many of those people are very, very poor in this country, and they have absolutely absolutely nowhere to go. And I think a lot of it is a lack of health insurance, and that is
