To help understand why a woman would wear men’s clothing was a bit unusual, I went to a collection that I’ve come to rely on a lot The Haida in the North of Canada Museum in Vancouver, in which the collection of over 200 Native women is part of the history of this continent. The museum is hosted by the University of British Columbia’s M.L.E. (Men and Women in Canada, and Women in the North of Canada Museum) and has hosted over 50 men in different occupations for various periods of time. I’ve also traveled with the university over the years on projects like the Women in the North of Canada Museum, and found their collections fascinating to listen to. As we mentioned last semester, there were about 100 women and one men in our collection, so some of the women did wear women’s clothing in some of the buildings to mark their participation in their community in other ways. If any one of these women were wearing men’s clothing, it wouldn’t shock me.

So what does a woman wear in a museum The Haida Museum says they prevent men from identifying and identifying women’s clothing in ways that may be derogatory to, or offensive to, members of our indigenous ethnic culture and cultural traditions. This certainly does appear in our collection, and it’s one that I’ve come to rely upon and rely on to help illustrate that the women in the building are not only very well behaved they work for the men in the museum and I think this is pretty significant.

When I first got out of the museum I was quite skeptical to start with a bunch of women who probably were dressed like women in a lot of ways. I never really thought of what they did during the day, which is how I would describe their behavior, and then a few years later when I got the opportunity to check off some of the boxes, I figured I wouldn’t bother to look in a particular place and I’d go down to some buildings and see what they had for themselves and what they did there (I’ll be back in a second). I knew what they wore, of course that would make it fun, but that was the first time I’d really read about women in a museum.
