Jermain Defoe is delighted to be able to join Sunderland for a fee in the region of 15million.

He is keen to play up to his playing days and believes Defoe has become a huge part of the future at the Saints.

The 25 year-old has already seen his form rise following the introduction of new signing Ross McCormack.

Defoe said I think Ross has made great progress.

The fact that he has been brought on as a midfielder has made him a much better player.

He has helped out and has really taken that from some of the young players.

The fact that he has gone as this young lad, he has been a big presence in the team, helping us win more points.

Hopefully that continues to be the case for the future of the club, not just from him but from the way he plays and what he does for us.

Defoe signed the move for a reported 17m following the departure of Ryan Giggs, but said it was the way he was raised in the area.
