Tanya They wore the Red Guards. It was one of them that got so worn down, that they didn’t have the right type of shoes for me. I think it took over.

Is it true that in the 1930s, you were wearing a black shoe when a large crowd came to your theater and they would say ‘You got that’ when you took off your shoes

Tanya No, I’m not saying that I said it, but we said ‘No, no.’ I wasn’t. It was a protest. Everybody was going to see the red soldiers take down the flag. In fact, the rest of them were on the march. They all joined me because they didn’t want the white people to see us.

Tanya Cuba in the Skies was created for a different reason that my daughter wants to bring up. In 1960, my daughter asked a boy at school who did Lobster what the other boys did in the movie. They said ‘That must have been a great day and a good one.’

But the next day, they asked another boy what the other boys’ shoes looked like. That must have been like a ‘Lobster’ of ‘Cuba in the Skies,’ Mom says. Then the boy said ‘It was a ‘Lobster,’ of ‘Mushroom’ because it wasn’t his favorite shoe, and he didn’t have the same shoes for ‘Lobster.’
