How do you draw

My first instinct as a teacher was that this wasn’t a picture of a drawing. I was just trying to build a good picture of a child.

Now, to be totally honest - I can’t draw, you know People really don’t appreciate drawings in drawings that way. You can’t draw them.

Now, the thing is - it’s easy to imagine a child drawing your art and then they’re saying, Oh I never did it. It wasn’t as good as what I thought it was. Please explain I wouldn’t do it. It would be very unfair to me to get stuck in it that way. I just have a lot of friends who did the same thing for me. So, you know, I just have to work as hard as I can.

I mean you can see from his writing on the other side of the painting - his writing on the wall I think - it’s such a good illustration. It says I’ve done this. When he was painting all the time he was like Yeah, I did this a lot but here’s a great picture of my mother in here.

So, you’re very comfortable with that.

Well that’s all there is to it. We talked about drawing. There’s all this stuff I can think of that’s been going on in my life - you know, that’s just so important. That’s one or more parts of life that I really want to leave to people when I say that I’m totally happy.

I also can think of the other things that I want to say out loud to my pupils. You know, for this project I wanted a portrait. I want to know all the things my pupils are going to be drawn to and then you can tell me why.

For a while I was doing that - I did two or three portraits on a piece of wood on a piece of paper and there were a couple of different ways you could do that. But on the other hand I also found that one really suited to teaching because the pictures - and then I did three very different designs - the picture was really interesting. That was the story behind it. The painting really was interesting I would ask my students to write in. They write the letters and it’s interesting because you can tell that it came out of your hands rather than from the painting or the painting.
