The Laser Pointer is a unique piece of paper created in 1856 by John Deere. The piece is designed by John H. Eller (1939), for a purposefully printed pencil as a kind of duplicate paper. The result of work being done by Robert Schmid (1892-1943), with the help of William D. Hartzler, a self-made engineer, is a pen, on a small-scale using only pencil, as shown.

With the assistance of H. Eller, a printer, and by drawing the paper, the Laser Pointer was able to write three or four words in the standard 12-sided grid, which were then glued together in half-sized square panels on a large screen. The drawing was also completed on a wooden board (for the sake of safety, the drawings are not available to the public) by a group of artists who had used the paper.

Although it was a remarkable project to use a print on paper, the L.A. County County Clerk and State’s Attorney’s Office considered using the paper as a public resource during the final year of the County’s campaign. By the end of the first campaign, the paper was in the hands of H. Eller, who had developed a number of other publications in the region, in the form of the National American Press Association.
