But it’s not the only way. The state of North Dakota approved a law last year that aims to raise the minimum wage to 9 an hour by 2020. That’s on top of a recent law approved after the recent protests over anti-Donald Trump ads that have targeted state troopers and the governor’s office.

Many local businesses and farmers’ markets are already considering adopting such wages. But others want to be able to hire people with similar experience, or at a lower level.

So North Dakota isn’t looking to be the state that raises the minimum wage for employees but it has more work to do.

For now, companies can hire about half as many new workers as they would under a current law.

This is because federal law sets the minimum wage at zero. If an employee comes to work at a minimum wage or raises it to 10 an hour, an employer can refuse to hire him or her.

Because North Dakota has more labor available than many states, employers like Walmart, Burger King and KFC are willing to pay higher wages than they already do to attract workers.

We don’t have to hire a lot of people that are already in the labor force in order to hire higher-quality employees, said Wendy Hays, managing partner for law firm DeVincik Hart in Fargo.

There are at least three ways to make more money for your businesses and employees at the state average state minimum wage

  1. Raise a minimum wage by 10 percent or more – which would start at 9.25 the day before the law went into effect.

  2. Create a local state minimum wage to raise 10 an hour for local employees. This is something the state’s workers already do.

  3. Create a state minimum wage on a state by state basis. North Dakota has some of the most rural towns in North Dakota compared to the states for local pay. For example, when the state legislature passed a law last year allowing local workers to raise the minimum wage to 11 an hour, it raised the minimum wage by 8.5 percent.

If your local businesses like to be more friendly and cooperative, it will help. You can’t afford to have every job or the right to shop.

But we’re going to have to have some kind of an employer tax base of some kind or some kind of local base of some kind, Hays said.
