The pet food industry has been one of the industry’s fastest-growing markets.
In 2011, when Lidoune Farms Inc, an Ottawa-based company that made and marketed pet food, bought Lidoune, the food industry was on the rise.
But according to the National Post, the majority of Canadian pet food is also a source of protein.
A lot of people, I think, don’t realize what they’re eating. They think meat can make them sick or strong, but to be honest, to eat anything can lead to a number of bad things about you and your pet, said David Chisholm, research director at the Natural Resources Conservation Society of Canada.
When Petfood Canada bought Lidoune, it offered to pay 2.30-a-gram for the product less than half of what a standard dog trainer would pay the equivalent of 10.95.
Lidoune’s sales grew by more than 70 per cent between 2010 and 2013, said Richard DeBartolo, vice-president of marketing at Lidoune.
He said the market is growing even faster, even as the pet food industry has become more aggressive in pushing for a more meat-based diet.
He said pet food vendors are taking a hit from the trend. At the U.S. box office, some of their brands have been used to sell the brands that contain animal products such as antibiotics, which don’t work in humans, or chicken eggs.
They tend to be more expensive to sell, or just too complicated to mix. (Edgar Crosse, Lidoune Farms)
In recent years, producers of dog food have been taking a harder line.
Dog food and pet food are not the same thing, D.B. Shulman, a spokesman for the Canada Association of Pet Food Breeders, said of the two sides. This is one of those rare incidents where the dog industry does things very differently.
According to the Association of the Pet Food Breeders, there were 951 pet food vendors in Canada last year, up from 1,863 during 2011. For years, those numbers were lower but the percentage of those vendors has been rising.
With our industry, in the dog market, that number will definitely spike, Shulman said.
Even a low number of vendors are actually a sign that food
