JULIE EAST I think that’s what I always liked about a dance that I’d just been doing. When I started watching that, I thought there was something about the dance that was exciting. I felt like it was all in a couple of different parts. As time went on I started to find that in this dance it feels like you’re spinning out of control, it’s not a chore. It just keeps going. You feel like you’re in control, and the more you do that the more you can control.

GAYMAN MARTIN As you got into more of a serious routine, how did you start

JOYE DANSON Like that first day, when I came to New Orleans to visit an artist I’d been working with at a dance club, I was surprised at how much dancing had changed. People now have a chance to be able to express their thoughts, and I’ve found that the dancing part can be more engaging because the listener is telling the story. When I was doing a music study, the teacher made me sit down, and with my fingers, I was able to speak to a lot of songs. When I was in New York you had no idea how much of a difference an individual’s voice could make going into the scene. So I felt as I went into the dance program that I was at a place of power where we could take music and use it as a social expression instead of just a means for communication. I think that has given us a lot of opportunities to create content that really connects as a person and as a person.

GAYMAN MARTIN We’ve been talking a lot about making the whole dance program something I want to do. As I was getting into the program I saw a bunch of young dancers, people who’d been doing something just because they like how a crowd feels, and I thought, it’s a good time to make it into something. Did that help you think about how something that was just one day is more like a week to really think about the dancing part

DR. HANSON We were always working on that for a while, but I’d always found it hard to feel like I could do both. It’s really hard really when, just like in an art school, we had nothing but two students doing two things. That’s when I realized why I wanted to do something that was just different so much just the way the dancer got going. When
