- New York Times As new laws in Texas, California and New York permit same-sex couples to marry, Texas is the legal leader. The nation’s highest court on Thursday reversed a ruling upholding the policy in the Lone Star State that has sparked controversy among couples and other conservatives. A coalition of groups supporting same-sex marriage in both states was scheduled to consider what legal action to take Tuesday. As part of that coalition, the Texas Human Rights Commission is also considering legal action, a decision expected soon. It’s great to see that we got the votes, and I’m grateful for that, for recognizing there is more support, said Sen. Dan Coats of San Antonio, one of the first to express her support for LGBT rights. Coats, who has proposed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in his state, said the timing is nice to see Texas move along so well. It just shows the state of Texas and our state and the leadership, leadership of the American LGBT community, is not going to be sitting at the back like it did 20 minutes ago, he said. This is just really a positive, hopeful, positive sign for LGBT rights and our state to move forward with our plan when it is time to do so. Coats and many other Republican leaders said they’re hoping the Legislature will pass a constitutional amendment allowing same-sex couples to marry before the end of the year. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott opposed that proposal, saying he was worried it would go too far. It’s been clear for the past 20 minutes that a legal fight could be made on the issue of marriage, Abbott said in remarks Tuesday in Houston. I’ve always heard that this has been a fight, that marriage isn’t really for love over sex, and I’ve always opposed same-sex marriage. This is a really good fight that has been fought on the issue and I believe this is an area where we should be able to come together and really work together and try and get this problem on our feet. After the ruling, Coats said he expects Republican voters to vote yes on a constitutional amendment, which he said is a good step in the right direction. The Texas Human Rights Commission also said other federal civil rights cases brought to it by same-sex couples are still pending before the Court. Coats said his party will hold statewide meetings on the issue to take up the issue. I’m just looking forward to work with the Texas Equality Party, and all of us in the Republican Party, to
