We were very shocked at the level of professionalism by which people were treated by one side or the other and by what this sign says and shows that there is a lack of respect. We are just asking the Minister to get this right and to do the job right.

We were also surprised by the level of behaviour that people were able to display on this day.

This is a sign that people aren’t really paying any attention to what is happening. We do have a Minister on the phone asking people not to take it too personally, so we are asking our officers and the police to check in to our premises to see if we can change our approach.

We are asking our people there to do their part to get out in the wild with the signs. We are doing everything we can to stop it happening in our city.

There are so many issues that are at stake in this incident. The city can stop it. We can stop the problem in its tracks at the moment because this sign is illegal.

Can this be changed

Yes. The city has to take action and we have got to go outside and think about whether it is ok for others who share our views to be allowed to do what they want to do.

We are in an area that already has a number of large black and white signs, so it is no longer ok to take them.

It is a very important point. It is really about our ability to take forward ideas. We have to deal with what happens because it can cause us damage to the good work the Government has done on policing, whether it is an offence or not.

I have been involved in policing for two or three years in St James of London. It is very different from the kind of stuff that I have dealt with. We have a lot of resources.

The issue is that it’s very important that we deal with these issues and we should be able to talk to these people first when they are making difficult choices.

How would you prevent people like that in a city which has so many people in terms of their rights and responsibilities

We have to have a responsible police team. We are going to work hard to help these people.

Last month the Council of Australian Police launched a joint initiative to look at ways to tackle crime in the city.

We would look into ways to increase public safety by introducing better training for police officers and training for the police.
