A former Marine who has been serving in Afghanistan has been sentenced to five years of life in solitary confinement after he pleaded guilty to being a dumb-bumb-bumb and committing a terrorist conspiracy.

In a rare victory for the Army, U.S. District Judge Gary L. Shulman sentenced the former Marine on Monday for violating two of the terms of parole imposed by the Army last year.

Mourners gathered Monday morning at a Washington memorial to Marine Corps Sgt. Robert Dolan of L.A. County Prison on a day where the former Marine was serving an extensive military detention.

Shulman ordered the Marine to be taken to treatment and served five years of the six-year sentence, then suspended without pay. The five-year maximum was imposed after dishonor was discovered.

A Navy spokesman declined comment.

Shulman told L.A. County District Judge Robert P. Fitch he expected the sentence to serve only as a deterrent to get people out of the country to do serious things of consequence. The sentencing followed an order from former Marine Col. Richard Brown, a senior prosecutor at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, who ordered the Marine put on supervised release. Brown was also ordered to stop fighting and return to service and ordered to serve five- years of the six-year sentence at an unspecified time.

Under a plea agreement entered by Shulman, Brown agreed to turn himself in to Fitch in exchange for four years of community service and three years of prison time under a parole that runs for at least three years. Brown did not sign the deal.
