When asked to predict what would happen in a dogfight with a rival, half the dogs in the group didn’t react to any physical threat (not even a few blows to the face or head). When asked to think about the next best thing in the world, half the dogs in the group weren’t surprised to learn the most about the latest developments. These findings support the prediction of the popular wisdom that a dog is a good handler who won’t get too involved.

This hypothesis has been supported by two previous studies showing that dogs are less likely to use physical force against potential rivals. They suggested that dogfighting is much safer if you can control a potential rival, because you don’t have to be afraid of you, which also means that when a rival breaks through you can take his or her chance while your team beats him or her up. However, as I explain in my recent post in the Animal Ethics blog, some of our canine experts have said that with the right training and tactics dogs are capable of becoming very physical. The most effective way to help a dog get the kind of physical attention he or she needs is to learn to protect themselves from physical attacks as well as from the possibility of getting hurt.

What’s more, when in doubt, we can’t rely on our dogs to guard us, or to help us. It is not unusual to have a dog that we have to defend ourselves from. A good trainer or a trainer who understands this needs to be able to give this dog a very high level of self-defense, and he or she will have a pretty good idea how to do that. They will also need to use physical means to protect themselves but are always ready to help if necessary.
