WASHINGTON President Donald Trump could take action, the White House confirmed Thursday, after he and congressional leaders raised a red flag in a fiery meeting about the country’s health care overhaul Wednesday.

But the president has already indicated he intends to take immediate steps to undo some parts of the Affordable Care Act including the subsidies that make it more expensive for millions of consumers and many insurers to offer coverage.

The push follows a meeting Wednesday with House Speaker Paul Ryan that gave the president a chance to discuss the president’s response to Friday’s GOP health care bill that included the measure’s individual mandate repeal, but a number of changes to the law including major new Medicaid enrollment requirements and changes to the way the state and localities are handling Medicaid.

The president called the meeting a positive step for his administration, and one that would help spur legislation. It came hours after he said the health care bill had failed every time out the way.

We’ve been through a bit of bad stuff in the healthcare system, and we’ve let those bad days pass us, and he really wants to go back to that, and we want him to do that, Trump said.

The president said he was also looking forward to taking action as the Senate considers legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act. But the focus of the meeting, the White House said, was the House speaker’s handling of his budget.

The meeting took place at Trump Tower in New York, where the president discussed the health care bill but did not speak to reporters. When asked if his speech was intended to include additional information on other areas of the president’s thinking, Trump told reporters, No.

Cruz and his wife were at Trump’s office to meet with the president. Trump had no prior knowledge of the meeting.

Our focus was on meeting the president, he said, and that was the most important question for anybody, and one of our very first conversations was with a lot of very strong voices, he said, Cruz and his wife, Heidi, who were with Trump at the meeting, told reporters. His leadership was important, and it was what we would want his team to focus on.
